What you need

  • Passport: Must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in the UK. It should also have at least one blank page for the visa.
  • Visa application form: You must complete the online application form on the GOV.UK website.
  • Financial proof: Evidence of sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay. This typically includes bank statements for the last 6 months showing regular income and a significant balance. The required amount is not fixed but should demonstrate you can afford your trip and return.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of booked accommodation for your stay and a confirmed return ticket or evidence of onward travel plans.
  • Photograph: A recent passport-sized photograph meeting specific UK visa photo requirements (e.g., 35x45mm, plain white background, neutral expression, no headwear unless for religious reasons).
  • Biometrics: Fingerprints and a photograph will be taken at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) run by our commercial partner, VFS Global or TLScontact. You will be directed to book an appointment after submitting your online application.
  • Travel health insurance: While not always mandatory for short stays, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical emergencies is highly recommended for all travelers.

Fees & processing time

  • Priority service: Available for some visa types, offering a decision within 5 working days for an additional fee of £200 (approximate USD 255).

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • Apply well in advance: It is recommended to apply at least 2-3 months before your intended travel date, especially considering potential processing delays.
  • Common rejection reasons: Incomplete documentation, insufficient financial evidence, unclear purpose of visit, discrepancies in application details, and a history of overstaying visas in other countries are common reasons for rejection for applicants from Afghanistan.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For UK visas, applications are processed through authorized commercial partners like VFS Global or TLScontact. Direct embassy applications are not typically an option for visa applications.
  • Current travel advisories: Always check the latest travel advisories from your home country and the UK government regarding safety and security before planning your trip.
  • Extension options inside United Kingdom: Extensions within the UK are generally only permitted for specific visa categories and under strict conditions. For visitor visas, extensions are rare and usually only granted in exceptional circumstances. It is best to apply for the full duration you intend to stay initially.
