What you need

  • Passport validity: Must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry.
  • Application forms: Specific forms are usually provided by the sponsor or via the airline/hotel booking. There is no universal 'Afghanistan citizen application form' to download directly.
  • Financial proof: While not always explicitly requested for all visa types or for all travelers, it is advisable to carry proof of sufficient funds for your stay (e.g., bank statements showing a balance of at least AED 3000-5000 or equivalent). This is especially important for Visa on Arrival.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Proof of confirmed accommodation (hotel booking or sponsor's residency proof) and a confirmed return ticket are mandatory for most visa applications and for Visa on Arrival.
  • Photo specifications: Recent passport-sized photographs (4x6 cm) with a white background. Eyes must be open, face clearly visible, and no head coverings (unless for religious reasons and the face is fully visible).
  • Biometrics: Not typically collected for e-visas or visas obtained through sponsors. For Visa on Arrival, biometrics (fingerprints) may be taken at the immigration counter.
  • Travel health insurance: Mandatory for all visitors to the UAE. It must cover medical emergencies and repatriation. This is often a requirement for visa application and will be checked upon arrival.

Visa types

  • Tourist Visa (Single Entry): Sponsored by a UAE resident, hotel, or airline. Validity: 58 days from issue date. Max stay: 30 days. Single entry. Approximate fee: AED 350-500 (USD 95-136).
  • Tourist Visa (Multiple Entry): Available for certain nationalities, but generally not applicable for Afghanistan citizens directly. For specific cases, sponsorship from a major UAE airline or hotel group is needed. Validity: 90 days from issue date. Max stay: 90 days within a 180-day period. Multiple entry.   • Student Visa: Sponsored by a UAE educational institution. Max stay: Varies based on program duration, renewable.

How to apply

  • Pre-arranged Visa (Sponsored by UAE Resident/Company):
  • This is the most common method for Afghanistan citizens.
  • 1. Sponsor Application: The sponsoring individual (family member, friend) or company must apply on your behalf. This is done through the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) portal or authorized General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) service centers in the respective Emirate.
  • 2. Document Submission: The sponsor will need your passport copy, photograph, and other supporting documents as required by the ICP.
  • 3. Approval: Once approved, the visa will be issued electronically or as a sticker in your passport, depending on the process. You will receive an entry permit.
  • Visa on Arrival (Limited Eligibility):
  • Afghanistan citizens generally do NOT qualify for a Visa on Arrival in the UAE. The exceptions are very specific and usually linked to holding other valid visas or residency from certain countries, which is rare. It is highly recommended to secure a visa in advance.
  • Through Airlines/Hotels:
  • Some UAE-based airlines (e.g., Emirates, Etihad) and major hotel chains offer visa assistance for tourists. You book your flight and/or hotel, and they facilitate the visa application process for you. This usually involves paying the visa fee and service charges upfront. The visa is then processed electronically. This is a reliable method for tourist visas.

  • Service Fees: If applying through a sponsor's company or an airline/hotel, additional service fees may apply, ranging from AED 100 to AED 300 (USD 27 to USD 82).
  • Total Cost Estimate: For a 30-day tourist visa, expect a total cost of around AED 450-700 (USD 122-190), including service fees.
  • Standard Processing Time: Typically 2-5 working days for pre-arranged tourist visas. However, it can take longer depending on the sponsor, immigration workload, and completeness of documents.
  • Express/Priority Option: Not always available for Afghanistan citizens and depends on the sponsoring entity. If offered, it can reduce processing time to 24-48 hours for an additional fee.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • Application Timing: Apply at least 3-4 weeks before your planned travel date to allow for processing, potential delays, and to secure your travel arrangements.
