What you need

  • Online forms: no DS-160 or VAF1A; complete the PNG online e-visa application through the official portal at https://www.immigration.gov.pg/.
  • Financial proof: not strictly required online, but you should show funds to cover your stay; recommended minimum around USD 1,000 for 30 days.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: proof of accommodation (hotel booking or invitation letter) and a return/onward ticket.
  • Photo requirements: passport-style photo 35x45 mm (3.5x4.5 cm), white background, JPEG/PNG, high resolution, file size typically under 1 MB.
  • Biometrics: biometrics online submission is not required; you may be asked to provide biometric data at the point of entry if requested.
  • Travel health insurance: recommended but not mandatory; ensure coverage for the duration of stay and medical emergencies.

Visa types

  • Tourist visa (Online e-visa) — Official name: Papua New Guinea Visitor Visa – Tourist; Validity: up to 90 days; Max stay per visit: up to 60 days; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 60 (PGK ~210).
  • Business visa (Online e-visa) — Official name: Papua New Guinea Visitor Visa – Business; Validity: up to 90 days; Max stay per visit: up to 60 days; Entry: Multiple entries up to 2 per year; Approx fee: USD 90 (PGK ~315).
  • Student visa (via Embassy, not online) — Official name: Papua New Guinea Student Visa; Validity: up to 1 year; Max stay: up to 12 months; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 180 (PGK ~630); notes: not available through the online e-visa system and requires PNG embassy processes and admission.
  • Work visa (via Embassy, not online) — Official name: Papua New Guinea Work Visa; Validity: up to 2 years; Max stay: up to 12 months; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 300 (PGK ~1050); notes: not available through the online e-visa system and requires employer sponsorship and PNG embassy processing.

How to apply online

  • How to apply online: go to https://www.immigration.gov.pg/ and create an applicant account; complete the e-visa application with all required details.
  • Upload documents: passport data page, recent photo, travel itinerary, hotel bookings or invitation letter, and proof of funds if requested.
  • Pay the visa fee: fees are payable in USD or PGK online; e-visa fees vary by category (see below) and are non-refundable once processed.
  • Processing time: approximately 3–5 business days for Tourist (e-visa); 5–10 days for Business; for Student/Work (not online) processing occurs via embassy and may take 2–6 weeks depending on the case.
  • How approval arrives: you will receive an email notification; the e-visa is issued as a PDF or attached within your online account; print a copy or keep a digital copy to present on arrival.

  • VFS/BLS service fee: not applicable for online e-visa; if you pursue embassy-based routes for non-online categories, service fees may apply per the local embassy.
  • Total cost estimate: for online e-visa (Tourist or Business) expect ~USD 60–90; for Student/Work via embassy, total costs increase to ~USD 180–300 plus any embassy-specific charges.
  • Standard processing time: Tourist 3–5 business days; Business 5–10 business days; Embassy-based Student/Work 2–6 weeks depending on the case.
  • Express/priority option: generally not available for PNG online e-visas; embassy routes may offer expedited processing at special fees where available.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers
