What you need

  • Passport validity: Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date of entry; ensure the passport has at least one blank page for identification purposes.
  • Specific forms: There are no separate in-country forms for the Malawi e-visa; you must complete the online application at https://www.evisa.gov.mw/.
  • Financial proof: Provide evidence of funds suitable for your stay; no published minimum amount, but a typical guideline is to show funds covering your planned stay (for example, bank statements for the last 3 months).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Hotel booking confirmation or host invitation letter, plus evidence of onward or return travel.
  • Photo spec: Recent color passport photo (35x45 mm / 3.5x4.5 cm) with a white background; full face visible; no glasses (unless required for medical reasons); head coverings allowed for religious reasons; file format JPG or PNG.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are generally not submitted online; border authorities may collect biometrics at entry if required.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory, but strongly recommended to cover medical emergencies during Malawi stay.

How to apply online

  • Step 1: Create an account or log in on the Malawi e-visa portal.
  • Step 2: Complete the online form with your personal details, passport information, and travel plans.
  • Step 3: Upload required documents: scanned biographic data page of passport, a recent photo, invitation letter (for business), proof of funds, and hotel booking or host letter.
  • Step 4: Pay the visa fee by credit or debit card (USD).
  • Step 5: Submit the application and note your reference number; processing time is typically 2–5 business days.
  • Step 6: You will receive the approved e-visa by email or via the portal; print the e-visa to carry.
  • Step 7: On arrival, present the e-visa and passport to immigration authorities.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers
