How to apply

  • How to apply: This is typically a sticker visa (not an e-visa or visa on arrival) issued by the Hungarian Embassy/Consulate or by an authorized visa application center.
  • How to apply online: Access the official portal at https://konzuliszolgalat.kormany.hu/ to review requirements, download and fill out the Schengen visa application form and to book an appointment. Steps: 1) choose the visa type, 2) prepare the documents listed in the 'What you need' section, 3) complete the visa application form, 4) pay the visa fee and any service charges, 5) schedule and attend an in-person appointment at the Hungarian representation or designated visa center, 6) submit documents and biometrics, 7) wait for a decision, 8) if approved, collect your passport with the visa sticker.
  • Processing time: Standard processing is up to 15 calendar days from the date of your appointment; in exceptional cases processing may take up to 60 days.
  • How approval arrives: The embassy/consulate will notify you, and the visa sticker will be placed in your passport if approved.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: 80 EUR per applicant. This is typically paid at the time of application; local currency equivalent depends on the current exchange rate.
  • Service fee: If an external visa center is used (for example, a visa application center), additional service charges apply as published on the official portal; the exact amount varies by center.
  • Total cost estimate: 80 EUR plus any service charges.
  • Standard processing time: Up to 15 calendar days; up to 60 days in exceptional cases.
  • Express/priority option: Some representations offer expedited processing for an additional fee; check the official portal for availability and costs.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Start the process as early as possible; ideally 2-3 months before travel to secure appointment slots and accommodate verification steps.
  • Common rejection reasons for Afghanistan applicants specifically: insufficient proof of funds or accommodation, lack of travel medical insurance, incomplete or inconsistent forms, missing letters (invitation/sponsor), or inconsistent travel plans with stated purpose; insufficient ties to home country.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: Some Hungarian representations use external service providers for document handling and biometrics; verify on the official portal whether you should use a service center or submit directly to the embassy.
  • Travel advisories or bilateral notes: Always check the latest travel advisories from the Hungarian government and EU resources; ensure there are no sanctions or restrictions affecting your travel.
  • Extension options inside Hungary: Short-stay visas (Type C) cannot usually be extended; to stay longer, you must apply for a national long-stay permit (Type D) from within Hungary or leave the Schengen area and reapply from abroad if eligible.
