How to apply

  • Identify the correct Greek Embassy or Consulate, or the designated Visa Application Centre (VAC) like VFS Global, in your country of residence. The official website for Greek Embassies and Consulates is mfa.gr.
  • Schedule an appointment online through the VAC's website or the Embassy/Consulate's booking system.
  • Complete the Schengen Visa Application Form accurately and truthfully.
  • Gather all required supporting documents as per the checklist provided by the Embassy/VAC.
  • Attend your appointment. You will submit your application form, supporting documents, passport, photographs, and pay the visa fee and service fee (if applicable). Your biometrics (fingerprints and digital photo) will be collected.
  • If required, attend a visa interview at the Embassy or Consulate.
  • Track your application status online through the VAC's portal or as advised.
  • Collect your passport and visa (if approved) from the VAC or have it couriered, depending on the service chosen.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa Fee: €80 for adults. This fee is non-refundable.
  • VFS Global Service Fee: Approximately €25-€30 (subject to change and location).
  • Total Cost Estimate: Around €105-€110, excluding potential courier fees or other optional services.
  • Standard Processing Time: 15 calendar days. However, it can extend up to 45 days in individual cases or if more documentation is needed.
  • Express/Priority Option: Generally not available for standard Schengen visa applications. Processing times are managed by the consulates. It is advisable to apply well in advance.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • Apply well in advance: Due to potential processing delays and the need for thorough documentation, apply at least 1-3 months before your intended travel date.
  • Common rejection reasons for Afghanistan applicants: Insufficient financial proof, unclear purpose of visit, lack of strong ties to Afghanistan (e.g., stable employment, family, property), incomplete or fraudulent documentation, and previous immigration violations.
  • VFS/BLS vs. direct embassy application: Applying through a designated VAC like VFS Global is often more convenient as they handle appointments and document submission. However, the final decision rests with the Embassy/Consulate. Direct application might be an option if available, but can be more complex.
  • Travel Advisories: Always check the latest travel advisories from your country and from Greece regarding safety and entry requirements before planning your trip. Visit the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs website (mfa.gr) for official information.
  • Extension options inside Greece: Extensions are generally not granted for short-stay Schengen visas unless under exceptional humanitarian circumstances, and must be applied for at the relevant Greek immigration authorities (Asylum Service or Hellenic Police) before your visa expires. It is very difficult and not guaranteed.
