Ethiopia Visa for Afghanistan Citizens 2026

Afghan citizens must apply for an Ethiopian e-visa (Tourist or Business) online at https://www.evisa.gov.et/; Tourist e-visas cost USD 52, Business e-visas USD 72, with standard processing 3–5 working days; print the approved e-visa to present at border.

What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from date of entry, and have at least one blank page available for stamping.
  • Specific forms: No DS-160 or embassy forms are required for the e-visa; complete the online application on https://www.evisa.gov.et/ and upload a color copy of the passport biodata page plus a recent passport-style photo.
  • Financial proof: Not routinely required to upload for the e-visa; however, immigration officers may ask for proof of funds or sufficient means to cover your stay).
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide proof of hotel bookings or an invitation letter if staying with a host, and a return/onward ticket or travel plan.
  • Photo spec: A recent passport-style photo, 2x2 inches (51x51 mm), white background, full face visible, taken within the last 6 months; file format typically JPEG.
  • Biometrics: No pre-appointment biometrics required for online e-visa; you may undergo biometric checks at the port of entry if requested by Ethiopian immigration.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for the e-visa, but strongly recommended to have travel health insurance for your trip.

  • Tourist e-visa: Official name Tourist Visa (e-visa); Validity: 90 days from date of issue; Max stay per entry: 30 days; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 52.
  • Business e-visa: Official name Business Visa (e-visa); Validity: 90 days from date of issue; Max stay per entry: 30 days; Entry: Single; Approx fee: USD 72.
  • Student e-visa: Not available via the e-visa portal for Afghanistan passport holders; requires embassy/consulate processing.
  • Work e-visa: Not available via the e-visa portal; requires embassy/consulate processing.
  • Transit e-visa: Not available via the e-visa portal; check with the Ethiopian MFA if you need a visa to transit through Ethiopia.

Application process

  • How to apply online: Go to https://www.evisa.gov.et/ and create an account to begin your application.
  • Steps: 1) Log in and select visa type (Tourist or Business); 2) Fill applicant details; 3) Upload required documents (passport copy and photo); 4) Pay the visa fee by international card (USD); 5) Receive the e-visa by email; 6) Print the e-visa and present it at the border on arrival.
  • Processing time: Standard processing is typically 3–5 working days; expedited/urgent processing may be available for an additional fee and deliver in 24–48 hours.
  • How approval arrives: An electronic visa document (ETA) is emailed to you and can be printed to carry to Ethiopia.

  • Visa fee (USD): Tourist USD 52; Business USD 72. - Local currency equivalent: The portal shows USD amounts; if a local currency equivalent is displayed during the application, use that figure at checkout.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for online e-visa applications (no separate visa processing service fee from VFS/BLS for e-visas).
  • Total cost estimate: USD 52 (tourist) or USD 72 (business), plus any express/urgent surcharge if chosen.
  • Standard processing time: 3–5 working days.
  • Express/priority option: Available for an additional fee with processing in 24–48 hours where offered on the portal.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • Apply well in advance: at least 7–14 days before travel; allow extra time during holidays or peak travel periods.
  • Common rejection reasons (not Afghanistan-specific but relevant): incomplete or inconsistent data in the application, passport validity less than 6 months, photo not meeting specifications, mismatch between stated purpose and documents, missing hotel bookings or return ticket, or insufficient funds if requested by border authorities.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For the e-visa, apply directly online via the official portal; embassy or consulate visits are separate paths and may have different requirements.
  • Travel advisories: Check your government’s current travel advisories for Ethiopia and ensure you comply with any entry requirements or security considerations.
  • Extension options inside Ethiopia: Visa extensions for tourist stays may be possible through Ethiopian Immigration authorities; contact the nearest Migration and Nationality Administration office before your current visa expires to inquire about options, fees, and processing times.
