Application process

  • How to apply online: There is currently no public online e-visa application for Afghan citizens on the official El Salvador portal. Visa applications should be submitted through Salvadoran diplomatic missions. Portal reference: https://www.rree.gob.sv under Consular Services > Visas.
  • Steps:
  • 1) Confirm visa type and requirements on the rree.gob.sv visa pages.
  • 2) Gather documents: passport, photos, completed visa application form, bank statements, hotel/ invitation letter, flight itinerary, return ticket, etc.
  • 3) Schedule an appointment with the nearest Salvadoran embassy or consulate.
  • 4) Attend the appointment, submit documents, and pay the visa fee as instructed. Biometric data may be collected.
  • 5) Wait for the decision (processing time typically 5–15 business days after the appointment).
  • 6) If approved, your passport will be returned with the visa stamped or the visa issued as per consulate procedure.
  • How approval arrives: In most cases, the embassy will stamp the visa into your passport or issue a separate visa document and notify you by the contact method provided.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee (USD): Tourist USD 60; Business USD 70; Student USD 150; Work USD 120
  • Any consular service or application processing fee (if applicable): Not publicly listed for El Salvador; check with your embassy for exact service charges
  • Total cost estimate: Sum of visa fee plus any applicable service fee (example: Tourist: about USD 60 + small service fee if charged)
  • Standard processing time: 5–15 working days after appointment (may vary by mission)
  • Express/priority option: Not commonly offered; some missions may offer expedited case handling upon written request with higher fees; confirm with the embassy

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • Plan well in advance: start applications at least 8–12 weeks before travel, especially if consular appointment slots are limited.
  • Common rejection reasons (Afghanistan specific): Incomplete documents, insufficient funds or ties to home country, inconsistencies in travel history, lack of clear purpose of visit, or incorrect visa category. Ensure documents clearly establish intent and itinerary.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: El Salvador typically processes visas through its own diplomatic missions. Verify which method your nearest mission uses and apply through the official channel.
  • Travel advisories: Check current travel advisories from your government (e.g., US State Department, UK FCDO) for Afghanistan citizens traveling to Central America.
  • Extension options: If you overstay, contact the Dirección General de Migración y Extranjería before your visa expires to request an extension; extensions are assessed case-by-case and may incur additional fees.
