What you need

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from the date you enter Colombia, with at least two blank pages for immigration stamps.
  • Specific forms: For the Colombia e-visa, use the online e-visa application form on the official Cancillería portal; no DS-160, VAF1A, or other country-specific forms are required for the online process.
  • Financial proof: Provide evidence of sufficient funds for your stay. A common guideline is the equivalent of about USD 50–100 per day of stay; include bank statements or other formal proof for the last 3 months.
  • Accommodation and return ticket: Provide confirmed hotel bookings or an invitation/host letter, and a return or onward travel ticket.
  • Photo spec: Upload a recent passport-style photo with a white background; preferred image size around 600x600 pixels (or higher) in JPG/JPEG format; file size up to 2 MB.
  • Biometrics: Biometrics are not typically required as part of the online e-visa application; if requested by a Colombian consulate or at entry, you may be asked to provide biometrics there.
  • Travel health insurance: Not mandatory for the e-visa, but having travel health insurance covering medical expenses is strongly recommended.

  • Student visa: Visa de Estudiante. Official name: Visa de Estudiante. Validity: up to 2 years (extension possible). Max stay per year: aligned with academic program. Approximate fee: USD 52.
  • Work visa: Visa de Trabajo. Official name: Visa de Trabajo. Validity: up to 2 years (employer sponsorship required). Max stay per entry: up to 1 year (subject to approval). Approximate fee: USD 52.
  • Note: All e-visa applications for Afghanistan citizens fall under the online e-visa program; fees are typically uniform for these categories and are paid during the online process.

How to apply online

  • How to apply online: Start at the official Cancillería portal and access the e-visa service. The main portal is https://www.cancilleria.gov.co/ and the e-visa section.
  • Steps:
  • Create or log in to your e-visa account on the portal.
  • Complete the online visa application form with accurate personal details, travel plan, and purpose of visit.
  • Upload the required documents (passport scan, photo, proof of funds, accommodation or invitation letter, and round-trip itinerary).
  • Pay the visa fee (approximately USD 52; local COP equivalent accepted by the gateway). Any paid amount is processed through the online system.
  • Submit the application and wait for processing (typical 3–5 business days).
  • Receive the decision via email; print the e-visa document and attach it to your passport copy if required for entry.
  • Travel to Colombia and present the e-visa along with your passport at immigration on arrival.
  • Processing time: 3–5 business days under normal processing; longer during peak periods.
  • How approval arrives: The visa decision is emailed to the applicant and linked electronically to your passport in the Colombian immigration system.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee (e-visa): USD 52. Local currency equivalent (COP) will be shown at the time of payment; approximate COP 196,000 based on a 1 USD ≈ 3,760 COP rate and subject to change.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable for online e-visa applications; there is no separate consular appointment fee for the e-visa itself, though some payment gateways may charge a small processing fee (usually 0–3%).
  • Total cost estimate: USD 52 plus any small gateway processing fee if applicable.
  • Standard processing time: 3–5 business days.
  • Express/priority option: Not offered for online e-visa applications; expedited processing is generally not available.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: Submit your e-visa application at least 2–3 weeks before your intended travel date; allow up to 4 weeks during busy periods or holidays.
  • Common rejection reasons (Afghanistan applicants): Incomplete documentation; passport validity less than 6 months from entry; insufficient funds or financial proof not matching the requested stay; inconsistencies between travel itinerary and documents; past immigration or visa issues.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For the e-visa, applications are completed online via the Cancillería portal; there is generally no in-person appointment required.
