Guide last updated June 6, 2026. Always verify with official sources before travel.

What you need

  • To apply for a Bolivian visa, Afghanistan citizens must generally provide the following:
  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six (6) months beyond your intended period of stay in Bolivia.
  • Specific forms: A completed "Formulario de Declaración Jurada de Solicitud de Visa" (Sworn Statement Visa Application Form). This form must be filled out online at https://www.rree.gob.bo/formulario-online/ and printed, or obtained from the consulate.
  • Financial proof: Proof of economic solvency to cover your expenses during your stay. This can include recent bank statements (covering the last 3-6 months), employment letters stating salary, or other verifiable sources of income. A general guideline is to show access to at least USD 50-100 per day of planned stay.
  • Accommodation and return ticket requirements: Confirmed round-trip flight itinerary (not necessarily a purchased ticket, but a reservation) and proof of accommodation, such as confirmed hotel reservations or an invitation letter from a host in Bolivia. If invited, the invitation letter must be certified by a Bolivian public notary.
  • Photo spec: Two recent passport-sized photographs (typically 4x4 cm) with a white background, full face view, and without glasses or head coverings (unless for religious reasons).
  • Biometrics: Specific biometric collection (e.g., fingerprints) is not globally standardized for Bolivian consulates, but some diplomatic missions may take fingerprints or conduct brief biometric scans as part of the application process.
  • Travel health insurance: While not strictly mandatory for Group III visa applicants, travel health insurance is highly recommended. It should cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and repatriation.

Visa types

  • For Afghanistan citizens, Bolivia requires a "Visa de Objeto Determinado" (Determined Purpose Visa) as they fall under Group III of Bolivia's visa categories. This category encompasses various purposes, including tourism.
  • Official name: Visa de Objeto Determinado (for purposes like Tourism, Business, Student, Work, etc.)
  • Validity: Typically granted for a single entry with a validity of 30 days initially, extendable in Bolivia.
  • Max stay: An initial stay of up to 30 days is common. This can usually be extended twice, each for 30 days, totaling up to 90 days within a one-year period.
  • Single/multiple entry: Generally, the initial visa is single-entry. Subsequent extensions or specific circumstances might allow for multiple entries.
  • Approximate fee: The fee for a Visa de Objeto Determinado for Group III countries is approximately USD 100. This is subject to the specific consulate's rates and local currency conversion.

How to apply

  • Afghanistan does not have a Bolivian diplomatic mission. Therefore, applicants must apply at a Bolivian Embassy or Consulate in a neighboring country or a country where they hold legal residency (e.g., Pakistan, Iran, Turkey, India).
  • Identify the nearest Bolivian Embassy or Consulate that processes visas for non-residents or residents of your current location. Contact them directly to confirm their specific requirements and application procedures.
  • Gather required documents: Collect all necessary documents as listed in the 'What you need' section, along with specific requirements from the chosen consulate.
  • Complete the online application form: Fill out the "Formulario de Declaración Jurada de Solicitud de Visa" online at https://www.rree.gob.bo/formulario-online/. Print the completed form.
  • Schedule an appointment: Contact the consulate to inquire about appointment availability for visa submission and an interview. Appointments are usually mandatory.
  • Attend the interview: Submit your complete set of original documents and photocopies, attend the required interview, and pay the visa fee. The consular officer will review your application.
  • Processing and collection: Wait for the visa to be processed. Once approved, you will be notified to collect your passport with the affixed visa.
  • Documents checklist for Consular Visa (Visa de Objeto Determinado):
  • Original passport, valid for at least 6 months beyond the intended stay, with at least two blank pages.
  • Photocopy of the passport's bio-data page.
  • Completed and signed visa application form (online form printout).
  • Two recent passport-sized photographs (4x4 cm, white background).
  • Round-trip flight itinerary.
  • Proof of accommodation (hotel reservations or notarized invitation letter from Bolivia).
  • Proof of economic solvency (bank statements for the last 3-6 months, employment letter, pay stubs).
  • Yellow Fever Vaccination Certificate (highly recommended, and mandatory if traveling from or transiting through endemic areas).
  • International Certificate of Vaccination.
  • Original Criminal Record Certificate (Police Clearance Certificate) issued by the relevant authority in your country of residence, legalized or apostilled.
  • Original Birth Certificate and a copy, legalized or apostilled.
  • Original Marriage Certificate (if applicable) and a copy, legalized or apostilled.
  • Letter of intent or cover letter explaining the purpose and duration of your trip.
  • Copy of legal residence permit (if applying from a third country where you are not a citizen).
  • Any additional documents requested by the consulate.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee: The fee for a Visa de Objeto Determinado for Afghanistan citizens is approximately USD 100. This amount is generally payable in USD or the local currency of the consulate where you apply. The approximate equivalent in Afghan Afghani (AFN) is 7,200 AFN, but payment in AFN is typically not accepted.
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable, as applications are made directly to the Bolivian Embassy or Consulate.
  • Total cost estimate: The primary cost is the visa fee of approximately USD 100. Applicants should also budget for travel expenses to and from the consulate, legalization/apostille of documents, and potential translation services.
  • Standard processing time: Visa processing for Group III countries typically takes between 10 to 20 working days after submission. However, due to background checks and verification, it can extend to 30 days or more.
  • Express/priority option: Expedited processing is generally not available for Visa de Objeto Determinado for Group III countries.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: It is strongly recommended to apply at least 2 to 3 months before your intended travel date. This allows sufficient time for processing, potential consular interviews, and any additional document requests, especially considering the need to apply abroad.
  • Common rejection reasons for Afghanistan applicants specifically: Rejection can occur due to incomplete documentation, insufficient proof of funds, lack of clear travel purpose, inability to demonstrate strong ties to your country of residence (raising concerns about overstaying), or security-related concerns that often lead to more stringent vetting for Group III nationalities.
  • VFS/BLS vs direct embassy application: For Bolivian visas for Afghanistan citizens, applications are handled directly by Bolivian Embassies or Consulates. There are no VFS Global or BLS International services involved for this visa type.
  • Any current travel advisories or bilateral notes: Always check travel advisories from your country's foreign ministry and the Bolivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (rree.gob.bo) for any updates on travel restrictions, health warnings (e.g., Yellow Fever outbreaks), or specific entry requirements. There are no specific bilateral notes that simplify visa processing for Afghanistan citizens for Bolivia; they are subject to standard Group III requirements.
  • Extension options inside Bolivia: If you wish to extend your stay beyond the initial period granted, you must apply at the Dirección General de Migración (DIGEMIG) offices in Bolivia before your current visa expires. Tourist visas (part of Visa de Objeto Determinado) can usually be extended twice, each for 30 days, up to a maximum total stay of 90 days within a one-year period.
