  • Single/Multiple Entry: This is a single-entry permit. If you exit Bhutan and wish to re-enter, a new permit application process would generally be required unless specific arrangements are made for a continuous itinerary.
  • Approximate Fee: The visa fee is USD 40 per person. Additionally, a Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night is mandatory for all tourists (excluding specific exempt nationalities). This SDF is separate from the visa fee and covers various aspects of your tour and contribution to Bhutan's high-value, low-volume tourism policy.

How to apply online

  • The application for Bhutan's e-Visa permit is handled entirely by a licensed Bhutanese tour operator on your behalf. There is no direct online portal for individual applicants to submit their visa request.
  • Here are the steps involved:
  • 1. Choose a licensed Bhutanese tour operator: Select a tour operator registered with the Tourism Council of Bhutan. You can find a list on the official Bhutan Tourism website or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.
  • 2. Book your tour package: Work with your chosen tour operator to design and book your complete tour itinerary, including flights, accommodation, meals, transport, and a guide. Pay the full amount for your tour package, which includes the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night and the visa fee of USD 40.
  • 3. Submit required documents to your tour operator: Provide your tour operator with clear, scanned copies of your valid passport (with at least six months validity from your entry date) and a recent passport-sized digital photograph.
  • 4. Tour operator submits application: Your tour operator will then submit your visa application online to the Department of Immigration, Ministry of Home and Cultural Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan, through their secure e-visa system.
  • 5. Receive visa clearance: Once your visa application is approved, the Department of Immigration will issue an electronic visa clearance letter (e-Visa permit). Your tour operator will email this letter to you. It is crucial to print this document.
  • 6. Entry to Bhutan: Upon arrival at Paro International Airport (or other designated entry points), present your printed e-Visa clearance letter, along with your passport, to the immigration officers. Your visa will then be stamped into your passport.

  • Processing time: Typically 3-5 working days from when the tour operator submits a complete application with full payment. During peak seasons or if additional information is required, processing may take longer.
  • How approval arrives: Approval is received as an electronic visa clearance letter (e-Visa permit) sent by your tour operator via email.

Fees & processing time

  • Visa fee in local currency AND approximate USD:
  • Visa Fee: USD 40.
  • In Bhutanese Ngultrum (BTN): Approximately BTN 3,300 (based on an approximate exchange rate of 1 USD = 82.5 BTN, subject to fluctuation).
  • VFS/BLS service fee: Not applicable, as visa applications are processed directly by the Department of Immigration via licensed tour operators.
  • Total cost estimate: The total cost will comprise the visa fee (USD 40) plus the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night, multiplied by the number of nights you stay. This is in addition to the cost of your chosen tour package (accommodation, meals, transport, guide, etc.), all paid upfront to your tour operator.
  • Standard processing time: Visa clearance is usually issued within 3 to 5 working days after the licensed tour operator submits the complete application and full payment to the Department of Immigration.
  • Express/priority option: There is no officially advertised express or priority visa processing option for tourist visas. In urgent cases, your tour operator might be able to request expedited processing, but this is not guaranteed and depends on the discretion of the immigration authorities.

Tips for Afghanistan travelers

  • How far in advance to apply: It is highly recommended to book your tour package and submit all necessary documents to your tour operator at least 2 to 4 weeks in advance of your intended travel date. This allows sufficient time for visa processing, potential queries, and tour logistics, especially during Bhutan's peak tourist seasons (March-May and September-November).
  • Common rejection reasons for Afghanistan applicants specifically:
  • Incomplete application or missing documents submitted to the tour operator.
  • Passport not meeting the minimum validity requirement (less than 6 months).
